The current programming assignment and Yngvi's paper gave me an idea for a final project. You may or may not be familiar with the old Nordic/Celtic game of Hnefatafl, but I believe it has never been implemented as a computer game and I'd like to give it a try. I mentioned it to Hannes on Friday and he approved, so I'm here looking for partners if anyone's interested. There are apparently several theories on how the game was actually played (I learned one at the Viking Festival in Hafnarfjörður last summer, and the Wikipedia Article mentions several more). All of them have two players, one controlling the king-piece (hnefi) and several defenders, starting at the centre of the (either 9x9 or 11x11) board, versus a more numerous force of attackers, starting from either the edges or corners. The victory condition for the king-player is the escape of the king via specially marked squares, either at the centre of the edges or in the corners (depending on the version), and the attacker must capture the king to win. All pieces move like a rook in chess - as many squares as they want in straight lines (not diagonal), and they cannot pass through any other pieces. Pieces are captured by two opposing pieces on each side. I'd prefer tackling this in either Java or Python. Any takers?
