Hello everyone! Let's all use this thread to introduce ourselves to each other My name is Hannes Högni Vilhjálmsson, and I teach the part of this course that deals with discourse and dialog processing (last few weeks). I am particularly interested in face-to-face communication, which brings more to the picture than the words alone. In fact, seeing someone's gesture or facial expression can completely alter the interpretation of what is being said. I study this so that I can build computer characters that move their bodies in natural ways as they speak. You can use such characters to give a computer a human appearance, or you can use them as your own animated "avatars" (graphical representations) when meeting people online. I got my PhD in Media Arts and Sciences from the MIT Media Lab in 2003 and worked as a research scientist at UCS's Information Sciences Institute for 3 years before joining Reykjavik University. Here I'm doing research in the Center for Analysis and Design of Intelligent Agents (CADIA), where my primary research project is called "Humanoid Agents in Social Game Environments". I'm also on the board of Alelo Inc., a company that uses language technology to teach foreign languages and culture. Now we would like to hear more about you. Briefly state something about yourself (e.g. relevant background) and why you are drawn to the topic of this class. I also highly recommend that you add a photo to your forum profile (just go into "profile" above and provide an URL to a 100x100 photo of you). Your participation in these online forums will be noted and will help with your class participation grade, so don't hesitate to post things Cheers, - hannes högni

Godan dagenn! Ég heiti Nik og ég er frá thiskalandi. I have to apologize, I don't have those fancy Icelandic letters on my keyboard. I'm an undergraduate student in my third semester. I study computer sciences in cooperation with a company at the Hochschule Darmstadt, Universiyt of Applied Sciences. It's kind of a dual study, where I have to do three practical projects at my company in addition to the theoretical study at the university. To be honest, I took the NLP course because it is taught in English, but after the first lesson, I think it is a quite interesting topic, which will become even more important in the future. So I'm looking forward to what the course will bring.
Sjáumst!

Hi,
my Name is Oliver Fladda. I'm an undergraduate Student at the University of Applied Sciences Hochschule Darmstadt and participating a semester abroad here in Iceland.
Parallel to my studies, I work as a application developer for embedded devices at REA Systeme GmbH, Germany. I have sort of interest in programming language structures, parsers, tokenizers. compiler and interpreter technology. So, the Natural Language Processing course seems - besides the fact it is taught in english - a good choice to get a look at how ambigious languages are handled by computers.
Regards, Oliver

Hi my name is Emanuele Travanti, I'm graduate student at Camerino University and I study computer science.I am interested to learning as much as I can about Artificial intelligence, then I think natural language processing could be a good chance.

Hi everyone,
My name is Grímur Tómasson and I'm an RU graduate student. There is a lot of things I find interesting in natural language processing. I studied literature before I went into computer science so using computers to process language also relates to my previous studies. My favorite course in the undergraduate studies was on compilers so this course was really a no-brainer in my case. Grímur

Hi,
My name is Tihomir and I am from Bulgaria. Currently I am a graduate student in Máltækni (I dare not use an English term:)) at RU/HI. I have a BA-degree in Icelandic and an MA in Nordic Linguistics. In my studies so far I have also focused on general linguistics and phonetics and phonology in particular. I also enjoy reading about language typology and language preservation. I have some limited background in programming and computer science but I am currently working on those skills.

Hi all,
My name is Þór Sigurðsson and I'm a graduate student at RU. I think the NLP course will serve as a good follow-up on the Compilers course.

My name is Hrafn Loftsson and I teach the first part of this course. I'm mainly interested in text processing, i.e. developing methods and software for processing and analysing a natural language, in particular the Icelandic one. During the last years, I have concentrated on developing tools for the Icelandic BLARK (Basic Language Resource Kit), e.g. a tokeniser and sentence segmentiser, a morphological analyser, a part-of-speech tagger and a finite-state parser. Many of these terms may not be familiar with you yet, but we will discuss them as the course progresses. The aforementioned tools have been grouped together under the name IceNLP which is now open source and available at sourceforge.net/projects/icenlp/I got my PhD in Natural Language Processing from University of Sheffield in 2007, but I have been teaching at Reykjavik University since 1999.

My name is Árni St. Sigurðsson and I'm an undergraduate @ RU. I wanted to take this course last fall and am intensely interested in the subject. I am most interested in the semantic layer and realize that morphological analysis is the key to deriving any calculable problems from sentences. I hope to gain an understanding of the tools used and according to the syllabus we should devote considerable time to semantics as well. The reason I find the field fascinating is the connection to Computer Intelligence. Thoughts are most often expressible in language and the study of how to study language by way of calculation a pre-requisite for working with CI.
