Hi everyone,
This is our first discussion thread for the Virtual Environments course. We'll start by introducing ourselves.
I teach this course and this is one of my favorite topics in computer science. I got interested in it while I was studying computer science in University of Iceland back in 1991 and found a stack of conference paper proceedings in the library from the ACM conference on computer graphics (SIGGRAPH). The papers were full of computer generated photos that were attempts at imitating various natural phenomena. This task seemed like the perfect blend of science, technology and art.
I got my PhD in Media Arts and Sciences from the MIT Media Lab in 2003 and worked as a research scientist at UCS's Information Sciences Institute for 3 years before joining Reykjavik University. At Reykjavik University I'm doing research in the Center for Analysis and Design of Intelligent Agents (CADIA), where my focus is creating more lifelike agents and avatars for social game environments. I'm also on the board of Alelo Inc., a company that develops virtual environments for social training.
Now I would like to hear more about you. Briefly state something about yourself (e.g. relevant background) and why you are drawn to the topic of this class. I also highly recommend that you add a photo to your forum profile (just go into "profile" above and provide an URL to a 100x100 photo of you). Your participation in these forums counts towards your "participation grade", so get some "cheap" points by being visible here ;-)
Cheers, - hannes högni

Hi everyone, I'll be introducing myself, providing a glance of what I've been doing lately. After two years of BSc in Computer Science in Camerino, I've studied at the Mälardalen University in Västerås (Sweden) for five months as an Erasmus exchange student. I graduated in June 2010, presenting a Bachelor Thesis about a project developed during an Internship at the Loccioni Group (Moie - AN). The thesis was all about Software Engineering and Development, as well as Networking; in that period I found out that I am quite keen on the processes of engineering and design of software. In fact, after a 3-months period in England for improving the language, I chose UNICAM again for mostly two reasons: 1) The possibility to study in the field of Complex Systems Engineering; 2) The even more interesting possibility to study for a year in Iceland. I'm currently at the first year of MSc in Computer Science in Camerino, indeed; if nothing goes wrong I'm going to leave in August for my Icelandic study period, and I'm actually enormously excited about that. I found this course very interesting, I will probably study some more about virtual environments and game planning in Iceland (perhaps developing a thesis on it, who knows). Cheers Francesco Lilli

Hello everyone, I'm Andrea Monacchi and I'm a student at the Unicam MSc in Computer Science. In 2007, I got a graduation in a polytechnical high school focused on electronics and telecommunications. During these years I started to like programming and in particular I made a lot of websites. In october 2007, I started my Bachelor adventure in applied informatics at University of Urbino "Carlo Bo" where I could know a lot of smart professors and learn very useful subjects focused (in my case) on embedded systems. I got my graduation with honours last october 2010. ( thesis, curriculum) Then, I joined University of Camerino because I'm very interested in the double degree programme with Reykjavìk University. I would like to acquire knowledges about artificial intelligence and I know that RU is strong in this discipline. I found this course very intersting and it could pull out all my creativity. Cheers, Andrea Monacchi

Hi everyone, I'm Emiliano Fraticelli. I got my BsC in Information technology and Management from University of Camerino in 2010, attending lectures at the Ascoli Campus. I enrolled for the MsC in the same university this year because I was interested in the chance of having lectures given by professor from foreign universities, like this course testifies. I've always been an hardcore videogamer, I've actually completed almost any AAA game of the last 20 years. I'm a huge fan of the "Elder Scrolls" and the "Mass Effect" saga; in fact I'm looking forward to the new installments of these games, coming next fall. Regarding this course I've found it very interesting. I would like to work with new technologies like the DX 11 hardware tesselation: www.youtube.com/watch?v=9F6zSgtRnkEAnd the next BIG step in graphics, the real time ray tracing: www.youtube.com/watch?v=zbokPe4_-mYCheers, Emiliano

Hi people! ;D Let me introduce myself. My name is David Sorrentino and I come from Naples (pizza and mandolin ). I graduated (Bachelor's Degree) in the year 2010 from the university of Urbino "Carlo Bo", defending a thesis about the intrusion detection systems (main subjects: operating systems, networking and software engineering). Currently I am attending to the first year of the Master of Science in Computer Science at the university of Camerino. This year I have had the possibility of applying for a fellowship in order to study in Reykjavik from August 2011 to June 2012 and (fortunately) I have obtained it. So, I am looking forward to leaving, starting this adventure and improving my knowledges (especially in the field of the artificial intelligence, virtual environments and complex systems engineering). I am very interested in software engineering, operating systems and networking, but lately I am becoming keen on designing and developing distributed systems. Regarding the topic of this class, I am very fascinated by it. In my opinion virtual environments is one of the most interesting subjects related to the computer science. Indeed, nowadays they are used in very many scientific and social research areas and I think that in future they will be more and more. I am really hoping to learn as much as possible from this course. I will be an eager beaver, I promise!! Greetings, David

Hi everyone,
My name is Samuele Sabbatini and I'm student at Unicam MsC in Computer Sciences. I got my BsC in Computer Sciences in Camerino in jully 2010. My bachelor thesis regards Georeferencing software developed in ASP.NET. This project was developed during an internship at APRA Informatica srl in Jesi. During my Bachelor degree I studied at Malardalen University in Vasteras (Sweden) as an Erasmus exchange student with Francesco Lilli.
I have always been interested in computer sciences because I am a videogames fan. I like play videogames such as Manger ones, RPG and Adventure Games above all in a real context.
I have always dreamed of working in a game development field. Now attending this course, I realized that I can pursue this passion. So I think that this course is very interesting and I really hope that I could learn as much as possible.
Cheers, Samuele Sabbatini

hi all i'm Samuele Rilli, i'm a student at Unicam.
My hobbies are videogames (FPS and strategic ones are my favourites) and music. I'm interested in this course because i can somehow create videogame environments, and that's really cool! I'm fascinated by space, stars and spacecrafts, i can say more in general by sci-fi and futuristic stuff.
Greetings

Hello everyone, although a "slight" delay I joined this forum too. I am Alessandro Bettacchi and I am 35 years old. I got B.Sc. in Computer Science in 1999 at University of Camerino and two years ago I decided to enroll in M.Sc. in Computer Science.
In the last twelve years I worked as a freelance IT consultant around Italy, dealing mainly with database development and administration and Web application development. Nevertheless I am a newbie to Python and especially in virtual environments, but attending this course I found some useful hints that most likely I will use for some future work.
Cheers,
Alessandro
